The Free to Speak Act amends the South Carolina Code to prohibit public school and higher learning employees from addressing students by pronouns inconsistent with their sex without parental consent. It also protects employees from adverse actions for declining to use such pronouns or identify their own. Students cannot face disciplinary action for similar refusals. Harmed parties can seek civil relief within 24 months of the alleged violation.
