South Carolina H5271 amends Section 43-5-15 of the S.C. Code to require the Department of Social Services to verify an applicant's citizenship status and eligibility for public assistance. Unless federal law dictates otherwise, the department cannot approve an application without confirming the applicant is a U.S. citizen and eligible for the requested benefits. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
