Birth Certificates

Introduced·5/6/25
Introduced Text

Prohibits changing gender on original birth certificates, allows court-ordered corrections for other birth certificate details.

This bill amends South Carolina law to prohibit changing the gender listed on an original birth certificate. It allows for certain corrections to other details on a birth certificate through a court petition. The court can order corrections to the registrant's name at birth, subsequent name changes, gender at birth, gender changes, date of birth, county of birth, and the full name of the mother and biological father. The court cannot, however, change the gender listed on an original birth certificate.
