Introduced Text

Automated License Plate Readers bill regulates use of automatic license plate reader systems by law enforcement in South Carolina.

The bill amends South Carolina law to define terms related to automatic license plate reader systems and restrict their use to specific governmental entities. It mandates that law enforcement agencies visually confirm alerts before performing a traffic stop and requires public disclosure of policies governing these systems. License plate reader data must be retained for no more than ninety days unless part of an ongoing investigation. The Department of Transportation is authorized to permit cameras on noninterstate highway rights of way.
