Allows for the reduction of mandatory minimum sentences for defendants who provide substantial assistance to the State after sentencing.
This bill amends South Carolina law to allow for the reduction of a defendant's mandatory minimum sentence if they provided substantial assistance to the State after sentencing. The assistance can include investigating or prosecuting another person, or aiding a Department of Corrections employee or volunteer in danger. The state must file a motion to reduce the sentence within one year of sentencing, or more than one year if the assistance was not known or reasonably anticipated until later.
