The Luke Barrett Act requires public schools and school districts to develop cardiac emergency response plans for sudden cardiac arrest incidents. It mandates the presence of automated external defibrillators (AED) at school athletic events and during school hours. The act also requires training for designated staff in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and AED use, following evidence-based guidelines. Immunity from civil liability is provided for those acting in good faith and gratuitously, unless grossly negligent. The provisions take effect July 1, 2026, for the 2027-2028 school year.
