Establishes a state work program for eligible nonviolent inmates within the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

The bill establishes a state work program within the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Eligible inmates, convicted of nonviolent crimes and physically able to work, will perform tasks such as maintaining roads and property. Work crews must consist of no more than five inmates and be monitored by GPS. Mistreatment of inmates by Department of Corrections employees is a misdemeanor. Unauthorized persons are prohibited from approaching work crews. Inmates who are unsuitable for the program must be returned to court for resentencing.
