The South Carolina General Assembly recognizes Major James Capers Jr. for his extraordinary heroism and lifetime service to the United States Marine Corps. Born in 1937, Capers broke barriers throughout his military career, becoming the first Black Marine in several roles. During the Vietnam War, he demonstrated conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity, earning the Medal of Honor. Despite severe wounds, he continued to fight, saving lives and exemplifying the highest traditions of the Armed Forces. After retiring, Capers devoted himself to veterans, mentoring marines and sharing his experiences.
