Rhode Island S3199 provides a legal cause of action for nursing home patients whose rights are violated.

Rhode Island S3199 establishes a specific cause of action for nursing home patients whose rights are violated under the state's "Rights of Nursing Home Patients" chapter. Patients can seek actual and punitive damages, reasonable attorneys' fees, and costs if they prevail in court. The Department of Health can also enforce the provisions of this chapter. Violations are considered misdemeanors, punishable by fines of up to $500 and/or six months in jail. The act takes effect immediately upon passage.
