Rhode Island S2047 amends the definitions of felony, misdemeanor, and petty misdemeanor offenses. A felony is any offense punishable by imprisonment for more than one year or a fine exceeding $1,000. A misdemeanor is any offense punishable by imprisonment for more than six months to one year or a fine up to $1,000. A petty misdemeanor is any offense punishable by imprisonment for up to six months or a fine up to $500. The bill also interprets "one year" in laws as 364 days. This act takes effect upon passage.
