Introduced Text

Rhode Island H8052 establishes a civil cause of action for injuries caused by artificial intelligence systems.

Rhode Island H8052 amends the General Laws to create a civil cause of action for individuals injured by artificial intelligence systems. It defines "artificial intelligence system" and "developer," and establishes a rebuttable presumption that an AI system satisfies the relevant mental state if a human would have under similar circumstances. It also provides absolute defenses for developers if the injuries result from a capabilities failure or negligence by the user or an intermediary. The act takes effect upon passage.
