Rhode Island H7643 simplifies the assessment of filing fees for appeals from small claims and consumer matters in district court.

Rhode Island H7643 amends sections 10-16-4, 10-16-9, and 10-16-14 of the General Laws in Chapter 10 to standardize and clarify the filing fees for appeals from small claims and consumer matters adjudicated by the district court. The plaintiff must pay a $75 filing fee, inclusive of a civil case processing fee and technology surcharge, while the defendant must pay a $75 filing fee if they claim an appeal. The act also specifies that if the defendant defaults for failure to answer and defend the claim, they forfeit all rights to appeal. This act will take effect on January 1, 2027.
