This bill amends the definitions of felony, misdemeanor, and petty misdemeanor in Rhode Island law. It specifies that a felony is any criminal offense punishable by imprisonment for more than one year or a fine exceeding $1,000. A misdemeanor is defined as any offense punishable by imprisonment for up to one year or a fine not exceeding $1,000. A petty misdemeanor is any offense punishable by imprisonment for up to six months or a fine not exceeding $500. The bill also clarifies that "one year" in any law refers to 364 days. The changes take effect upon passage.
