Rhode Island H7083 authorizes the city of Cranston to establish a housing division within its municipal court. This division will have original jurisdiction to hear and determine causes involving violations of city zoning ordinances and minimum housing standards. The Cranston city council can appoint judges and clerks for the housing division, who may or may not be the same as those for the municipal court. The housing division can impose sentences of up to 30 days in jail, fines up to $500, and has powers to administer oaths, compel witness attendance, and punish for contempt.
