Pennsylvania SB536 amends the Medical Practice Act of 1985 to clarify definitions and the scope of practice for genetic counselors.
Pennsylvania SB536 amends the Medical Practice Act of 1985 by adding a definition for "genetic test" and clarifying the scope of practice for genetic counselors. Genetic counselors can now identify, order, and coordinate genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies as appropriate for genetic assessments. They must also provide written documentation of medical, genetic, and counseling information for families and referring providers. Importantly, genetic counselors are not authorized to diagnose, manage, or treat any genetic or other diseases or conditions.
