Pennsylvania SB1409 amends insurance regulations to exempt certain prescription drugs for serious mental illness from step therapy requirements.

Pennsylvania SB1409 amends the Insurance Company Law of 1921 to exempt certain prescription drugs used in response to a behavioral health crisis from step therapy requirements. Specifically, if a prescription drug is approved by the FDA, used for treatment in response to a behavioral health crisis, and prescribed consistent with evidence-based standards, insurers or managed care plans may not require prior authorization or step therapy.
