Pennsylvania HB823 replaces fire drills with school security drills in public schools.

HB823 amends the Public School Code of 1949 to replace fire drills with school security drills in Pennsylvania public schools. Each school entity must conduct one school security drill within 90 days of the school year and may conduct two more after that. These drills replace the two fire drills previously required. The drills must be age-appropriate, involve school personnel, and avoid simulating violence. Following the drills, teachers must debrief with students, who can access mental health services.
