Pennsylvania HB27 amends the Health Care Facilities Act by requiring hospitals and ambulatory surgical facilities to adopt and implement policies to mitigate exposure to surgical smoke using smoke evacuation systems. This applies to each procedure that generates surgical smoke. The policy must be developed in consultation with the entire surgical team and consider patient safety and the safety of operating room staff. The act defines "smoke evacuation system" as equipment that captures surgical smoke to protect the ocular and respiratory tracts of operating room occupants.
