Oregon SB1579 increases penalties for making false reports of child abuse.

Oregon SB1579 modifies the offense of making a false report of child abuse by increasing penalties. A first offense is now a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by a maximum of six months’ imprisonment, a $2,500 fine, or both. A second offense is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by a maximum of 364 days’ imprisonment, a $6,250 fine, or both. A third or subsequent offense is a Class C felony, punishable by a maximum of five years’ imprisonment, a $125,000 fine, or both. The changes apply to false reports made after the bill's effective date.
