Oklahoma HB3123 creates a legal cause of action for the intentional distribution of false news by news media outlets. The bill defines "news media outlet" broadly to include national, local, social media, and information platform companies. It allows the Attorney General to file civil actions on behalf of Oklahoma citizens against these outlets. Successful plaintiffs can be awarded actual damages, including profits from the false news, and punitive damages of no less than five hundred dollars per report. The bill excludes liability for false news shared for the purpose of satire or parody.
