S.672

Protect North Carolinians from Medical Debt

Introduced·3/25/25

Medical Debt Protection Act aims to shield North Carolina patients from excessive medical debt and unfair collection practices.

The Medical Debt Protection Act establishes a Medical Debt Mitigation Policy (MDMP) for large health care facilities in North Carolina. The MDMP mandates financial assistance for patients based on income, with free care for those at or below 300% of the federal poverty level and capped charges for those up to 600% of the poverty level. It also limits interest on medical debt to 2% per annum and prohibits certain collection actions like wage garnishment and property liens.
