North Carolina S385 amends dangerous dog statutes to allow dog owners to request a potentially dangerous dog designation be set aside.

North Carolina S385 amends the dangerous dog statutes by adding a procedure for setting aside a potentially dangerous dog designation. Owners can request the designation be set aside more than 18 months after the initial determination. The request must include an application and an assessment of the dog's behavior. The county or municipal authority responsible for animal control will consider the assessment, the original behaviors, the dog's management and care, and any changes in behavior. The authority's decision is final and not subject to appeal. The act becomes effective October 1, 2025.
