Flexibility in Filling Vacancies/Durham

Introduced·2/26/25

North Carolina S175 provides flexibility in filling vacancies on the City Council in Durham.

North Carolina S175 amends the Charter of the City of Durham to provide flexibility in filling vacancies on the City Council. It allows the City Council to appoint a qualified person to fill a vacancy within 120 days. If the Council fails to appoint someone within this period, it must call a special election. The bill also specifies that if a vacancy occurs in a Council member's seat, the appointed person must reside in the same ward. This act becomes effective upon becoming law.
