North Carolina establishes a pilot program to reimburse volunteer firefighters for mileage and equipment use.
The Volunteer Firefighter Reimbursement Program allows volunteer firefighters in North Carolina to be reimbursed for mileage from their duty station to the scene of an emergency and for personal equipment used at the scene. Reimbursement rates are set at the current standard business mileage rate issued annually by the Internal Revenue Service. The program, operated by the Department of Public Safety, Division of Emergency Management, will run from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026. Reimbursement requests must be submitted within 60 days of the event.
