The Second Look Act

Introduced·3/31/25

Allows for the reduction of prison sentences for certain inmates in North Carolina.

The Second Look Act allows inmates sentenced under certain statutes to petition for a reduction in their prison term. The court may reduce the sentence if the inmate has demonstrated maturity, rehabilitation, and fitness to reenter society. Factors considered include the inmate's age, history, behavior in prison, and victim impact statements. The act becomes effective December 1, 2025, and applies to motions filed on or after that date.
