Increases punishment for assaulting utility or communications workers in North Carolina.
The Worker Safety Act of 2026 amends North Carolina law to increase the punishment for committing an assault against a utility or communications worker. The act specifies that such assaults are guilty of a Class A1 misdemeanor if the worker is readily identifiable as such and is discharging or attempting to discharge their duties. This applies to workers providing electricity, natural gas, telecommunications services, or internet access services. The act becomes effective December 1, 2025, and applies to offenses committed on or after that date.
