H177

Reduce Barriers to State Employment

Introduced·2/24/25

North Carolina H177 aims to reduce barriers to state employment by assessing job requirements and removing unnecessary degree requirements.

North Carolina H177 mandates the State Human Resources Commission (SHRC) to regularly evaluate the educational, experiential, and training requirements for state jobs. The SHRC must determine when practical experience or training is more suitable than a four-year college degree and identify positions where requirements can be reduced. The bill also requires the removal of four-year college degree language from job descriptions when not necessary. The SHRC will report annually on these efforts starting October 1, 2025.
