H1140

State Employee Bereavement Leave/Up To 40 Hrs

Introduced·4/29/26

North Carolina H1140 provides state employees with up to 40 hours of paid bereavement leave for the death of an immediate family member and up to 8.

North Carolina H1140 amends the state's General Statutes to provide state employees with up to 40 hours of paid bereavement leave for the death of an immediate family member and up to 8 hours for a colleague. This leave is available without exhausting sick and vacation leave and is awarded in addition to other leave. The leave must be used within 180 days of the death and may not be used for calculating retirement benefits. The State Human Resources Commission will adopt rules and policies to ensure equitable distribution of leave, including prorated leave for part-time employees.
