Extends statute of limitations for unlawful cell phone use while driving to 90 days; increases penalties for texting while driving.

This bill amends New Jersey law to extend the statute of limitations for unlawful use of a cell phone while driving from 30 to 90 days. It also increases penalties for texting while driving, with fines ranging from $600 to $1,000 and motor vehicle penalty points from two to four. The bill targets drivers who use their phones or electronic communication devices while operating a vehicle, except when using a hands-free device. The fines collected will be allocated for public education on the dangers of texting while driving.
