Introduced Text

New Jersey S51 allows PERS retirees to return to elective public office under specific conditions.

New Jersey S51 permits a retired member of the Public Employees’ Retirement System to return to an elective public office with their former employer, either by appointment or election, without canceling their retirement allowance. This return is allowed if the retirement allowance has become due and payable, the retiree had attained the service retirement age, and the compensation for the office is less than $12,000 per year. The bill defines "former employer" as the public entity from which the retiree retired.
