New Jersey S3085 amends existing law to increase penalties for selling single cigarettes and cigarettes in packs of less than 20. The bill prohibits the sale of single cigarettes or packs with fewer than 20 cigarettes, whether through a vending machine or retail establishment. For vending machine violations, the penalty increases from $100 to $500 per day to $200 to $1,000 per day. For retail sales, the fine for a first offense rises from $250 to $500, and for a second or subsequent offense, it increases from $500 to $1,000. The changes apply immediately upon enactment.
