Introduced·3/4/24
Introduced Text

New Jersey S2841 prohibits landlords and third-party screening vendors from requiring photo identification for residential rental applications.

New Jersey S2841 aims to protect applicants for residential rental housing by prohibiting landlords and third-party screening vendors from requiring or requesting photo identification as part of the rental application process. This bill also prevents landlords and third-party screening vendors from conditioning approval of an application on the submission or provision of photo identification. Violations of this provision are considered unlawful practices under the New Jersey consumer fraud act, subjecting violators to penalties and allowing applicants to seek damages in court.
