New Jersey S2623 provides that the surviving spouse of a retired member of the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System (PFRS) who was receiving an accidental disability retirement allowance at the time of death can enroll in the State Health Benefits Program (SHBP) and continue to receive pension benefits after remarriage. This applies if the injury causing the disability, complications from it, or the aggravation or acceleration of a preexisting condition was a significant contributing factor in the retired member’s death.
