New Jersey S2524 makes it a crime for individuals to claim ownership or possession, or take possession, of a residential dwelling without the lawful owner's consent, for the purpose of renting it out or obtaining a benefit. This includes houses, apartment units, mobile homes, co-ops, and other types of residences. The bill does not apply to tenants, subtenants, lessees, sublessees, or assignees with a lawful occupancy interest, or to those with a good faith belief in lawful ownership or authorization to rent.
