S.2198

Expands eligibility under New Jersey earned income tax credit program to allow taxpayers with Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers to qualify.

Introduced·1/13/26
Introduced Text

Expands eligibility for New Jersey earned income tax credit to include taxpayers with Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers.

This bill modifies the eligibility criteria under the New Jersey Earned Income Tax Credit (NJEITC) program to allow taxpayers with Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN) to qualify. Previously, eligibility for the NJEITC was generally linked to the federal earned income tax credit program, which required a Social Security number. The bill ensures that taxpayers with ITINs, who may not qualify for the federal program, can still benefit from the NJEITC. The credit amount is applied against the tax due and, if it exceeds the tax due, it is treated as an overpayment.
