Introduced Text

New Jersey Safe Storage of Firearms Act establishes secure storage requirements for firearms and penalties for improper storage.

The New Jersey Safe Storage of Firearms Act mandates that firearms must be stored unloaded in a securely locked gun safe or container, with ammunition stored separately in a locked container. Failure to comply results in community service for a first offense and a disorderly persons offense for subsequent offenses. The act also repeals current law on minor access to firearms. It requires the Attorney General to launch a public awareness campaign about the dangers of unsecured firearms and appropriates $500,000 for this purpose.
