New Jersey S1704 establishes priority for certain firearm-related background checks when an applicant has obtained a domestic violence restraining order. The bill requires the background investigation of an applicant for a firearms purchaser identification card, permit to purchase a handgun, or permit to carry a handgun to take precedence over the investigation of other applicants if there is a restraining order in effect that was obtained by the applicant against a domestic violence offender pursuant to the “Prevention of Domestic Violence Act of 1991” (PVDA).
