New Jersey S1143 raises the crime degree for unlawful taking of a motor vehicle without consent. Currently a fourth degree crime, it will become a third degree crime, punishable by three to five years imprisonment, a fine of up to $15,000, or both. Additionally, the bill elevates the crime to a second degree if the act creates a risk of injury or property damage, punishable by five to 10 years imprisonment, a fine of up to $150,000, or both.
