New Jersey ACR116 formally recognizes Prince Hall, a Revolutionary Era activist and the founder of "Prince Hall Freemasonry." Hall, a free Black man, was denied membership in an all-white Masonic lodge in 1775 and subsequently founded African Lodge #1, later renamed African Lodge No. 459. Hall's advocacy included petitions to abolish slavery and extend public education to African American children. His legacy continues to influence over 5,000 lodges and 47 grand lodges that trace their lineage to the original African Lodge #1.
