New Jersey A960 amends existing law to require that firearm transfers between members of immediate family be conducted through a licensed retail dealer. Immediate family is defined as a spouse, domestic partner, civil union partner, parent, stepparent, grandparent, sibling, stepsibling, child, stepchild, and grandchild, related by blood or by law. Failure to comply with this requirement would be considered unlawful disposition of a firearm, which is a fourth degree crime. Fourth degree crimes in New Jersey are punishable by up to 18 months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to $10,000, or both.
