New Jersey A561 allows public school students five excused absences for mental or behavioral health reasons.
New Jersey A561 requires school districts to permit students five excused absences for mental or behavioral health reasons. Students must be given the opportunity to make up any missed school work. After two such absences, students may be referred to school support staff. These absences do not count toward chronic absenteeism and will not appear on transcripts or applications. The bill takes effect 180 days after enactment but remains inoperative until the first full school year following the effective date.
