Introduced Text

New Jersey A5233 allows businesses to round cash transactions to the nearest nickel or dime.

New Jersey A5233 establishes rounding rules for cash transactions in response to the federal government's end of penny production. Businesses that choose to round cash transactions can round amounts ending in $.01 or $.02 down to the nearest $.10, and amounts ending in $.06 or $.07 up to the nearest $.05. Amounts ending in $.03, $.04, $.08, or $.09 are rounded up to the nearest $.10 or $.05, respectively. The bill does not apply to non-cash payments. Violations incur civil penalties of $1,000 for the first offense, $2,500 for the second, and $5,000 for each subsequent offense.
