Introduced Text

New Jersey A3722 increases cigarette tax rate in phases over four years.

New Jersey A3722 introduces a phased-in increase in the cigarette tax rate over a four-year period. The tax rate will rise from $2.70 to $4.00 per pack of 20 cigarettes by July 1, 2027. Licensed retail dealers must file returns with the Director of the Division of Taxation by September 1 each year from 2024 to 2027, showing the amount of cigarettes in their possession. The bill does not alter the current dedication of cigarette tax revenues for smoking cessation and health care subsidy initiatives.
