New Jersey A1902 permits municipal, county, and regional police and fire forces to establish a five-year residency requirement for police officers and firefighters. This means that applicants must agree to reside within the municipality, county, or region for the first five years of their employment. However, exceptions can be made if a member of the police or fire department suffers injury or a threat of injury due to intimidation, manipulation of an investigation, or influence to violate their official duty.
