New Jersey A1849 mandates public school governing boards to verify employment eligibility of teaching staff and school employees using the E-Verify.

New Jersey A1849 requires the governing boards of public schools to verify the employment eligibility of teaching staff members and school employees using the E-Verify program. This verification must occur upon hiring and annually thereafter. The Commissioner of Education is directed to provide information about the requirements of this act and federal law governing E-Verify to each public school governing body and make it available on the Department of Education’s website. The act does not prohibit hiring teaching staff members with valid limited certificates for noncitizen teachers.
