New Jersey A1731 requires each school district and charter school to install at least one exterior key box at each school building by June 30, 2026. The key box must meet or exceed Underwriters Laboratories Standard 1037 or another nationally recognized industry standard for antitheft alarms and devices. The key box must contain keys and other access control devices necessary to access each building and room on the school grounds. The bill allows for exemptions if alternative plans and procedures are implemented to provide emergency access.
