New Jersey A1657 allows certain mental health professionals in school districts to refer students to private counselors for mental health services.

New Jersey A1657 permits student assistance coordinators, school counselors, school psychologists, and other mental health professionals in school districts to refer students to private licensed counselors for mental health assessments and services. These professionals cannot refer students to counselors with whom they or their immediate family have a significant beneficial interest. If the student cannot consent, the parent or guardian must consent before the private counselor provides services. The school district or the referring professional is not responsible for the cost of the services.
