New Jersey A1536 allows municipalities to permit single exit stairwells in new residential buildings under six stories.

New Jersey A1536 permits municipalities to adopt ordinances allowing single exit stairwells in new residential buildings of less than six stories for Group R-2 occupancy. This change applies to new applications submitted after the bill's effective date. The first floor may be used for nonresidential purposes if classified as nonhazardous and served by separate entrances. The Commissioner of Community Affairs must publish regulatory guidance, including a model ordinance, on the Department of Community Affairs' website.
