New Jersey A1243 grants municipal courts discretion to assess court costs for certain dismissals.

New Jersey A1243 amends the state's court cost assessment rules to allow municipal courts to impose court costs for dismissed charges of violations of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes and traffic ordinances as part of a plea agreement. The court can assess up to $33 per dismissed charge. This bill shifts some financial burden from local property taxpayers to those accused of offenses. The court costs will be deposited into the Automated Traffic System Fund or the Automated Traffic System Statewide Modernization Fund. The act takes effect immediately upon enactment.
