New Jersey A1173 permits the probationary or temporary appointment of law enforcement officers as State or county investigators under specific conditions. A permanent law enforcement officer with an active certification in the basic training course for police officers or State Police may receive a probationary or temporary appointment for up to 120 days to be trained and certified as a basic investigator. The officer may perform the functions or duties of a permanently appointed investigator during this period.
